Specific Learning Difficulties
There are a number of neurological conditions that impact children’s ability to read, write or process information.
These include dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia and dysgraphia.
Specific Learning Difficulties do not affect the child’s intelligence but they may need to learn in a different way or get extra help.
Torfaen has a specialist teacher who provides advice and support to schools to meet the literacy needs of their pupils.
The Specific Learning Difficulties teacher will be available to meet with school staff to discuss the children that receive additional school support, to help to review progress and support arrangements.
Identified pupils may be supported in several ways:
- By working in groups with an LSA supported by advice and guidance from the specialist teacher.
- by differentiated materials and specific strategies employed in the classroom
If you have concerns about your child’s literacy, please speak to their teacher or school additional learning needs co-ordinator.
