Home tuition

Home tuition supports children and young people of statutory school age who are unable to access mainstream education due to medical or psychological reasons.  Medical evidence will need to be provided to support any requests.

Education support is provided by the child’s school, and they remain registered at the school. A decision on whether a pupil needs to receive home tuition is made by an Additional Learning Needs panel.

Home tuition is different to elective home education, also known as home schooling, which is when parents remove their child from mainstream education and assume legal and financial responsibility for their education.

What can you expect if your child needs home tuition:

  • An education plan provided by the school
  • Online tuition provided via Torfaen Pupil Referral Unit
  • The option of tuition at a centre if required
  • Links to agencies that can help your child reintegrate into mainstream education
