Nursing Homes

All residential care homes offer personal care for people who are no longer able to live independently at home, even with support.

Nursing homes provide 24-hour nursing care by qualified nurses and other carers in addition to personal care. The person in charge of the home must be a qualified nurse or doctor and there will always be qualified nursing staff on duty.

Some homes are run by voluntary organisations or charities but most are run privately by individuals.

If you are assessed by social services as needing nursing care, your care manager will help you to find a nursing home that meets your needs.

Nursing homes should not be confused with residential homes which provide full board and personal care but not nursing care.

Nursing homes are registered to provide care for people of specific ages and needs. A range of nursing homes cater for people of all ages and nursing care needs.

All nursing homes in Torfaen are registered and inspected by the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales.

A list of registered residential and resident nursing homes can be obtained from social services.

Remember, there may be a waiting list for places at some nursing homes. If your move is urgent, or if you are a patient in hospital, you may need to consider other options such as moving into an alternative home for an interim.
