Respite care
When you are a carer, it’s important that you get a break from time to time to recharge your batteries and enable you to continue in your caring role.
This may involve someone coming into your home to look after the person you care for while you go out for a few hours, or may involve the cared-for person going into residential care for a short period of time, e.g. a week.
Respite care can also be a positive experience for the person you care for as it offers them a change of scenery and routine.
Respite can usually be arranged by your social care support worker, doctor or community nurse (if the person you care for has health care needs).
If you are choosing residential respite, you and the person you care for will usually have an opportunity to visit the residential home prior to any stay to reassure both of you.
Torfaen also offers short-term family-based respite for people learning disabilities, physical disabilities or mental health problems.
