What to do in an emergency

If an emergency occurs try to remain calm and carry out the following:

  • If immediate threat to life exists call 999 and request help from the Emergency Services.
  • Monitor news channels / local radio / social media channels of trusted sources for official updates – beware of misinformation.
  • If possible, check on neighbours especially those who are disabled or elderly and might not be aware of the situation.
  • You may be advised to evacuate or remain in your home. Follow any advice given by emergency services.
  • If evacuating, remember to consider any medicinal requirements, pets, phones/chargers, emergency contacts
  • If there is a risk of a gas leak or any other explosive atmosphere do not turn on any electrical switches, light candles or strike matches.
  • If there is an emergency and you have been asked to stay at home, go inside closing all doors and windows and close any non-essential vents. Monitor news channels for updates.

Travel – avoid travelling if current weather warnings are advising against it.  If you do need to travel, in case of breakdown or becoming isolated, have the following in your car:

  • Warm and waterproof clothing, gloves, hat, umbrella
  • Robust footwear
  • Water and some emergency food
  • Hi Vis jacket
  • Torch
