Emergency Evacuation

In some types of emergencies the emergency services may ask you to evacuate your home.  Where you will be asked to attend will depend on the nature and scale of the incident.  In most cases you would be asked to attend a rest centre which is aimed at providing short term basic shelter for displaced persons.

Rather than attend a rest centre you may prefer to self-evacuate to a friends or relatives house.  Make sure that you tell any emergency services personnel present of your intentions so that you can be accounted for.

If you have any elderly or disabled neighbours, inform the emergency services of their location.

If it is safe and there is time, try to remember to take the following items with you if you have to evacuate your home:

  • Any pre-prepared Emergency kit / grab bag
  • Emergency contact numbers
  • Medication and prescription glasses
  • Documentation (Insurance details etc)
  • Spare clothing and blankets
  • Cash/Credit Cards
  • Keys (House/Car)
  • Special dietary requirements
  • Pets with leads / carriers / baskets

Before you leave ensure all appliances have been turned off and the house is secured.
