Voter changes for parliamentary and PCC elections

Changes have been made to voting procedure for UK Parliamentary and Police and Crime Commissioner elections.

The changes do not apply to Senedd or local elections in Wales.

Voters will now need to show photo ID to vote at a polling station in parliamentary elections, by-elections and PCC elections.

If you don't have accepted photo ID, you can apply for a free voter ID document, which is known as a Voter Authority Certificate.

Other changes include:

• Online postal vote applications which will need to be renewed every three years.
• A limit on the number of postal votes that can be handed into council buildings or polling stations, to include your own and a maximum of five others.
• A requirement for a postal vote handling form to be completed when postal votes are returned by hand. If forms are not completed, postal votes will be rejected.

The changes also mean British voters living overseas can vote in UK elections regardless of how long they have lived abroad. However, proxy voters can now only act on behalf of a maximum of two domestic electors and two overseas voters.
