Working at an election

During national elections, Torfaen Council runs 70 polling stations. The council also runs county and community council by-elections when required.    

Each polling station is staffed by a Presiding Officer and Polling Clerk, who are responsible for making sure voting procedures are correctly followed.  

The elections team is looking for enthusiastic and motivated people to join a bank of Presiding Officers and Poll Clerks who can be called on when an election is due to be held.

• Presiding Officers receive £195 and Polling Clerks get £138.75, plus travel expenses
• You will be paid for training   
• Will have access to additional support on polling day

Presiding Officer - Louise Day 

I’ve been a Presiding Officer for two years and I’ve have worked at two elections and a by-election. The Presiding Officer role is very similar to the polling clerk but if a voter has a query or an issue, they come to you. You get comprehensive training and there is a team of inspectors you call on for support. The role involves working between 6am and 10pm on polling day but it’s surprising how quick it goes, especially if you enjoy chatting to people. My top tip to new POs is to make sure you have a warm coat or scarf with you.

Poll Clerk - Ellie Bradbury 

I’ve been a poll clerk for five years and I’ve have worked at five elections. It is interesting to see how much work goes into running an election and it’s nice feeling you’ve played a part in helping it to run smoothly. The Poll Clerk’s job is to assist the Presiding Officer with Election Day duties. These can include setting up polling station equipment, assist in the issue of ballot papers to members of public and ensure voters cast their vote in secret and put them into the correct ballot box. My top tip is to make sure you bring plenty of food and drink with you.
