Lost or Stray Dogs
Lost dog
If you have lost a dog, you should contact our Dog Warden as soon as possible.
We keep a record of dogs lost and found in the Torfaen area where these are reported to us, and our staff will be pleased to check this record for you if your dog has been lost.
Please contact us to report your lost dog and give your details:
- Monday – Thursday - 09:00-17:00 - Tel: 01633 648009
- Friday – 09:00-16:30 – Tel: 01633 648009
- Weekdays after 17:00 Mon-Thurs; after 16:30 on Fridays; all day on weekends and Bank Holidays - Tel: 01495 762200
In addition you can view www.hoperescue.org.uk and the Hope Rescue facebook page where pictures of lost dogs are posted.
You may also want to share details of a missing or found dog on social media, which receive lots of reports of lost, found and sighted dogs.
Please note: We do not respond to lost or stray cats.
Claiming your lost dog
If the Dog Warden has picked up your dog as a stray, providing your dog is micro-chipped and the details are up-to-date, or the dog has a name tag, we will not re-home any dog until we have tried to identify and contact the owner, and until at least 7 days has passed.
If your dog has been taken to our nominated Kennels, you will need to pay all of the relevant release fee directly to the Council, before your dog can be released (see fee table below).
Stray Dog
If you find a stray dog you can contact us to report this and arrangements can be made to collect or take directly to the kennels in line with contact information outlined below:
- Monday – Thursday - 09:00-17:00 - Tel: 01633 648009
- Friday – 09:00–16:30 – Tel: 01633 648009
- Weekdays after 17:00 Mon-Thurs; after 16:30 on Fridays; all day on weekends and Bank Holidays - Tel: 01495 762200
Out of Hours Service
If you are holding a stray dog outside of normal office hours, you should contact our Control Room on 01495 762200 for instructions on how to take the dog to our nominated kennels. We don’t offer a dog collection service outside normal office hours, so you should ring us on 01633 648009 on the next working day if you want us to catch or collect a stray dog.
Re-homing unwanted dogs
Unfortunately, we are unable to re-home dogs that cannot be cared for by their owners.
Re-homing stray dogs
Wherever possible, dogs that are not claimed after at least 7 days have passed, will be handed over to a re-homing charity, who work with us to make sure as many dogs as possible find good homes.
If a stray dog is ill or injured, we make sure that it is seen and treated by a vet. We try not to have any dogs put down, unless they are very ill, are deemed to be dangerous, or cannot be re-homed by our charity partners – and we always take the advice of a vet before we take this step.

Micro-chipping your dog
It is an offence to own a dog and not have it microchipped with up to date details.
To do so, you should contact your local vet to arrange for your dog to be microchipped. The vet will then use a microchip assigned to a specific database such as www.petlog.org.uk or www.anibase.com
Dangerous Dogs
We do not deal with reports of dangerous dogs. If you believe a dog is dangerous please report it to Heddlu Gwent Police.
