Phase two of essential maintenance work to the A472 in Pontypool is due to begin this week.

Work to reinforce the concrete structure underneath the road is due to start on Wednesday and is expected to take three months.

There will not be any disruption to motorists and the canal and towpath will remain open throughout the work, although some disruption may occur at times.

The first phase of the scheme involved work to the road surface and was carried out at night to reduce the impact on traffic.

Cllr Mandy Owen, Executive Member for the Environment, said: “The work taking place is essential to maintain the safety of the bridge.

“We are working closely with our canal coordinator and the Canal & Rivers Trust to ensure that people can continue to use the canal during this next phase of work, and we will also keep residents living near the canal basin informed.”

The next phase of work will take place in daylight hours.

People living in the vicinity of the bridge have been contacted to warn them some noise can be expected.
