Work to upgrade a section of Cwmbran Drive as part of the council's road improvement programme has been rescheduled for later this month.

Surface dressing works are now scheduled to take place on both carriageways between Sainsbury's and Llantarnam Park on Wednesday 8 July and Saturday 11 July, weather permitting.

Rolling lane closures will be in place during the work, but the road will reopen as soon as the work is completed. A 10mph speed limit will be in place until the road surface is sealed.

Drivers are advised to use alternative routes to avoid traffic disruption.

It comes after 23 roads were micro-asphalted in April and May this year, as part of the five-year Better Roads investment programme.

Surface dressing is a cost-effective, sustainable, and fast-acting preventative maintenance technique that extends road life by 10–15 years, seals surfaces against water damage, and improves skid resistance.

It restores surface texture, enhances safety, and significantly reduces long-term repair costs compared to full reconstruction.

Another phase of road resurfacing and large-scale repairs will start in the summer, focusing on roads in a worse condition. Roads were identified through officer inspections and data led road surveys.

The £6.4m Better Road programme was launched in August 2025, and last year, 38 roads were resurfaced alongside the council's annual maintenance schedule.

The work is being funded by £4m in council capital investment and £2.44m from the Welsh Government.
