The council is investing an additional £6.4m in improving local roads over the next five years.

An estimated 80 roads will be resurfaced as part of the significant investment, with work starting on the first streets this week.

It follows a survey of highways across the borough which found that while the majority of classified - or main roads meet national standards, a significant amount of minor roads are in need of repair.

Residents will be notified in advance of resurfacing work due to take place and temporary road closures will be put in place.

Residents are asked not to park on the streets while resurfacing work is taking place.

Cllr Mandy Owen, Executive Member for Environment, visited the start of work in Florence Place, in Griffithstown, today.

She said: "The roads around our homes are vital to the daily lives of residents, so I am very pleased we're going to invest £6.4m in the side streets that our residents use most frequently.

"Side streets make up the majority of our highway network and are vital for people's every day journeys. This work will mean better quality roads and brighter communities."

Waunddu, in Pontynewynydd, and Leigh Road, in Trevethin, are also due to be resurfaced this week.

The work is being funded by £4m additional capital investment and £2.44m from the Welsh Government's Local Government Borrowing Initiative.

It will be carried out alongside the council's annual highways maintenance programme.

Details of which roads are due to be resurfaced will be shared weekly via the council's Weekly News bulletin and social media - search #BetterRoadsTorfaen
