Pupils from Padre Pio Roman Catholic Primary School have taken part in a project to learn more about cultural diversity and religious beliefs.

The Year 5 and 6 pupils visited different places of worship, including the Cardiff United Synagogue, Shree Swaminarayan Hindu Temple, Sikh Gurdwara in Cardiff, and Newport’s Jamia Mosque.

The project was funded by the Community Cohesion Team who were on hand alongside parents to watch their school assembly last week as part of Inter Faith Week.

Year 6 pupil Max said: “From visiting these places of worship I have learnt how to pray like others from different faiths and I have been practicing mediation poses at home.”

Year 6 pupil Ffion added: “The biggest thing I learnt was that everyone is equal, and it is important to respect others.”

As part of the assembly, the pupils showed replica artefacts from each place of worship, performed traditional songs, and shared their personal experiences.

Headteacher Paul Welsh said: "This has been a wonderful opportunity to learn about different beliefs and to understand how we can all live together in a community to promote the common good.

“Understanding religious artefacts and asking questions to leaders and volunteers has significantly benefited our pupils by increasing their knowledge and promoting tolerance and empathy."

The West Gwent Community Cohesion Grant funds projects that challenge discrimination, promote inclusion, build a sense of belonging by bringing people together.

The council’s #NotInMissOut campaign celebrates the different learning experiences available to pupils who attend school regularly.
