Personal Care

Personal Care (which is sometimes referred to as Domiciliary Care or Home Care) is where a paid carer visits you in your own home and helps you with any daily activities you cannot safely manage on your own, such as getting up, washed, dressed, going to bed, assistance with toileting, showering or bathing.

Personal care can be funded by Torfaen Social Care and Housing (including Direct Payments), or privately funded by yourself. How often a carer visit and for how long each visit lasts, depends upon how much support you need. To be eligible for personal care funded by Torfaen Social Care and Housing, you will need an assessment to determine your eligibility for services.

While personal care generally refers to care delivered in the home, carers employed by personal care agencies may also undertake duties outside of your home.

In addition to these external services, there are two specialist personal care teams within Torfaen Social Care and Housing

• The Dementia Team provides long-term support to people with dementia.
• The Intake Team assesses and supports people for a maximum of six weeks (those who need support after that period will continue to be supported, however their package of care will be provided by an external domiciliary care provider).

There are a range of external personal care organisations that operate in Torfaen, that are regulated by the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales and monitored by the Social Care Commissioning Team within the Council.
