Schools investment programme

Over the next few years, and subject to funding from the Welsh Government’s Sustainable Communities for Learning programme, the council plans to invest in the following schools:

  • Ysgol Bryn Onnen
  • Ysgol Gymraeg Cwmbran
  • West Monmouth School
  • Abersychan School
  • Cwmbran High
  • Llanyravon Primary School
  • Pontnewydd Primary School
  • Coed Eva Primary School
  • Croesyceiliog Primary School

There are also plans to increase Welsh Medium education and Pupil Referral Unit places, and work with the Roman Catholic Archdiocese on plans for Catholic schools in the borough.

It follows £120m investment in schools in the borough since 2018, thanks to the Welsh Government’s former 21st Century School programme and new Sustainable Communities for Learning initiative.

Between 2018-2019, £91m was invested in:

  • Three new primary schools - Llantarnam, Blenheim & Ysgol Panteg
  • A new Croesyceiliog School secondary
  • Extensions and refurbishments to four primary schools - Garnteg, Cwmffrwdoer, Penygarn, new primary phase at Ysgol Gymraeg Gwynllyw
  • Improvements to Cwmbran High School
  • A new Torfaen Learning Zone

Ten school sites were also closed to remove surplus places.

Between April 2019 and 2025, nearly £30m was invested in a new Maendy Primary School nursery and Additional Learning Needs assessment centre in Cwmbran, and a 50-place extension to Crownbridge.

The work is part of the council’s objective to raise educational attainment, help young people and adults to gain the qualifications and skills needed to lead positive lives.

It also contributes to our commitment as a Marmot Council to investing in early years.
