Water Conservation
Saving water around the home is of benefit not just to you, but to everyone. Water usage is something that most people take for granted until the seasonal hosepipe bans are upon us.
Demand for water is rising in the domestic sector, and this reflects an increase in usage per head. Modern lifestyles demand huge quantities of water, both for personal and household use, for example, most homes have appliances such as washing machines, dishwashers, etc.
Water is a valuable and unpredictable source, and as water meters become more commonplace, saving water also means saving money!

Tips on saving water around the home
- Use the minimum amount of water required when you boil water in saucepans and kettles; that way you’ll save energy as well as water.
- Try keeping a bottle or jug of water in the fridge instead of running taps until the water runs cold.
- Wash vegetables and fruit in a bowl rather than under a running tap. The leftover water can be used to water the plants.
- Half-load programmes on dishwashers and washing machines use more than half the water and energy of a full load. Therefore, wait until you have a full load before switching the machine on.
- Don’t leave taps running unnecessarily, for example when you are brushing your teeth or shaving. This can waste up to 5 litres of water per minute.
- Take a shower rather than a bath. The average bath uses 110 litres of water compared to 30 litres for an ordinary shower. But remember that power showers can use more water than a bath in less than 5 minutes.
- If you do take a bath – share it with your partner! You’ll not only be saving water but adding a little spice into your relationship as well!
- Old toilet cisterns can use as much as 9 litres of clean water every flush. Reduce this by placing a ‘save-a-flush’ bag or ‘hippo’ in the cistern which saves water with every flush.
- Get leaks repaired quickly. Dripping taps can waste up to 4 litres of water a day.
