Business and third sector energy savings
Between 2024-2025, grants were given to 45 businesses and organisations to switch to renewable energy and or invest in energy reduction, thanks to the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
This year, grants of up to £15,000 are available for not-for-profit groups and £10,000 for businesses. Applications must be made before July 5, 2025. For more information, contact energy.management@torfaen.gov.uk.
Additional funding is also available for large scale energy reduction schemes.
Here are some organisations who received grants in 2024-2025:
Able Wales
The day centre in Cwmbran received £24,000 to install 20kW of solar panels with 5kWh of battery storage, saving an estimated three tonnes of carbon - equivalent to the amount of emissions produced by driving 15,000 miles. Since going live in April 2024, the system has provided an average of 84 per cent of electricity, saving an average of £1,100 a month.
Ponthir Village Hall
The hall received £25,000 to install 14kW solar system with 9kWh battery storage. In the first three months, the panels provided 70 per cent of their electricity needs – saving more than £1,500. The carbon reduction was equivalent to the benefit of planting 60 trees.
New Inn AFC
The football club received £24,000 towards the cost of 8kW solar panels, 10.5 kWh battery storage and upgrading their electric heating units. The new system has effectively eliminated their electricity bills.
Sharon Full Gospel Church
The church in Pontypool received match funding of £12,000 to install 7.7kw solar panels with a 10kWh battery which is estimated to have saved more than 1 tonne of carbon emissions annually.
Llantarnam Grange Arts Centre
The centre in Cwmbran received a grant of £17,000 to fund the installation of a 8 kW solar panel system and to upgrade to LED lighting leading to an estimated 2.5 tonne carbon reduction annually. The digital monitoring system showed an immediate saving in energy usage and cost.
Pontrhydyrun Community Centre
The home of Pontnewydd Football Club was awarded £5,400 to install an insulated suspended ceiling and LED lighting upgrade to reduce heating costs and electricity costs. They have reduced their carbon footprint by approximately one tonne per annum. Heating at the centre has improved and bookings have increased.
Llanyrafon Social Centre
Llanyrafon Community Association, in Cwmbran, received a grant of £25,000 to fund the installation of 40kW of solar panels. Since the completion of their SPF funded project the club has recognised the benefit of generating their own electricity and have subsequently self-funded battery storage to complement their new solar panel system, which provides an electricity supply until closing time.
Boat House Café
The café at Cwmbran Boating Lake receiving funding for a solar panel system and LED lighting in the café and toilets, a combined saving of more than three tonnes or carbon a year.
Llanyrafon Golf Course
The site in Cwmbran received a grant of £22,000 to fund the installation of a 17kW solar panel system with 20,000kwH of battery storage, which is estimated to reduce their carbon footprint by approximately three tonnes per annum. They anticipate the system will save thousands of pounds over the coming years.
Salon Rene
The hairdressers, in Cwmbran, receiving nearly £5,000 to pay for LED fluorescent lighting and energy efficient heaters. They have reduced emissions, saved money and improved lighting and heating in the salon.
