Perfect summer weather set the scene for a fantastic day at the Cwmbran Big Event on Saturday, as thousands of residents and visitors gathered at the Boating Lake for a day of free family fun organised by Cwmbran Community Council.
Torfaen Council hosted its first-ever Deal Village at the popular event, offering people the chance to learn more about the council’s new way of working alongside communities and partner organisations to improve lives across the borough.
The Deal Village proved a major success, with almost 400 people visiting the community lounge to explore the wide range of activities and support available locally, 264 visits to our apprenticeships team, 150 housing enquiries and 20 young people provided with Youth Service support.
The impact of the Torfaen Deal was showcased throughout the day, including volunteers from Tasty Not Wasty and Torfaen Take a Stroll and examples of volunteer opportunities with Torfaen Voluntary Alliance.
A wide range of council services were on hand to provide advice and support. The council’s apprenticeship scheme attracted strong interest from young people, while the housing team shared information about the Keys to Independence programme. The youth service also kept younger visitors entertained with a variety of activities.
Halo Leisure promoted health and wellbeing opportunities and offered visitors the chance to win a three-month free membership, with the winner to be drawn from those who completed a short Deal survey.
Visitors also enjoyed browsing the pop-up Steelhouse shop from Wastesavers, while Cwmbran Library showcased the services and activities for children, young people and families through its local hub.
The Deal Village brought together a range of services in one welcoming space, making it easier for residents to have face-to-face conversations about what matters to them and access support in their community.
Residents who missed the event will have another opportunity to visit the Deal Village at Party in the Park in Pontypool on Saturday 11 July.
