A school club that promotes peace locally and globally has been recognised by the international charity Rotary Action Group for Peace.
15 pupils are part of the Croesyceiliog Interact Club, which was set up in 2022, and is part of the Rotary Club’s youth division.
This October they were named the world’s first Peacebuilder Interact Club in recognition of the community work they have carried out to promote peace and community.
Highlights include fundraising and awareness activities for Rotary’s End Polio Now campaign and fundraising to pay for resources at the Jackie School in Kyemula, Uganda.
The school is now working towards developing a Peace Garden at the school, thanks to a £500 funding from Torfaen Council’s Community Cohesion Grant.
An arrangement of ceramic flowers will be displayed at the front of the school, symbolising more than 30 nationalities represented within the school community, alongside the message: “May Peace Prevail on Earth.”
Club president Arabella, who is in Year 9, said: “I have learned that peace isn’t just about avoiding conflict, it’s about creating understanding, listening to others, and standing up for what is right.
“I also got to meet Stephanie Urchick, the President of Rotary International, which was such a special experience. Hearing her speak about what Rotary does all around the world really opened my eyes to how connected we all are through kindness and service.”
Year 8 pupil Matilda said:“I feel proud to be a part of something that values kindness, respect and action. It’s an incredibly rewarding experience.
“It’s given me the chance to connect with others who care about making a difference, and it’s helped me grow both as a person and a leader.”
Headteacher Natalie Richards said: “I am delighted by the incredible impact our Interact Club has made. From supporting Jackie School in Uganda with vital health and education projects to raising awareness for End Polio Now, the pupil’s commitment to service has been inspiring.
“They have also brought kindness and promote a sense of belonging to our local community through foodbank collections, charity fundraising, and events for vulnerable residents.
”It’s is a privilege to see the student’s leadership, compassion, and determination in action.”
The Croesyceiliog Interact Club is supported by Henllys Rotary Club, with project updates being shared on their Facebook page.
