Pupils at Welsh medium primary schools are receiving extra language support this term in preparation for secondary school.

A programme has been developed by staff at the Carreg Lam Welsh immersion unit, in Pontypool, to help pupils in Years 5 and 6 develop the skills and confidence needed to thrive in Welsh-medium secondary education.

Staff from the council’s Welsh support centre are running a two-week Camu i’r Uwchradd, or ‘Step into Secondary’, programme for schools across Torfaen.

The course focuses on increasing proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing through activities like cooking, games and fun, as well as developing a strong Welsh cultural identity.

Dr. Matthew Williamson-Dicken, Head of Ysgol Panteg Primary and Carreg Lam, said: “Our mission is to ensure that every child feels confident and prepared when stepping into secondary education. By blending intensive language learning with cultural experiences, we’re not only developing linguistic skills but also nurturing pride and belonging within the Welsh community.”

Camu i’r Uwchradd is fully funded through grants from Welsh Government and Torfaen Council, ensuring accessibility for all families at no cost.

Carreg Lam, which means stepping stone, also offers a full programme for children who want to transfer from English-medium education and or who need additional support to stay in Welsh-medium education.

Cllr Richard Clark, Torfaen Council's Executive Member for Children, Families and Education, said: "We are proud to support initiatives like Camu i’r Uwchradd, which reflect our ongoing commitment to increasing the take-up of Welsh language education across the borough.

"This work also aligns closely with our ‘Not in Miss Out’ campaign, which emphasises the importance of regular school attendance. Carreg Lam offer something different - tailored support that ensures every child has the opportunity to succeed, stay engaged, and feel supported throughout their educational journey."
