Young carers from Torfaen have taken part in a celebration evening to mark Carers Action Day 2025.

57 young carers participated in activities at Mount Pleasant Hall in Cwmbran on Wednesday evening, including arts and craft workshops, and got to spend quality time with peers to strengthen friendships and support.

The annual event, organised by the council’s Young Carers Service, highlights the challenges faced by young carers which often means balancing caregiving with schoolwork and managing household responsibilities.

This year's theme, "Give Me a Break," focused on raising awareness of the pressure’s young carers experience at home, school, and work.

Izzy Pritchard, 18, presented a year in review, highlighting the various opportunities provided to young carers by the service through a series of photos and short videos.

16-year-old Chenile, who supports her mum and younger siblings, said:  "It's really hard to juggle everything. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed with school and caring for my mum. Tonight gave me a chance to relax and have fun with friends."

Amelia, aged 12 who also helps care for her mum, said:  "I often feel like I don't get enough time for myself. The activities tonight were a great way to unwind and forget about my responsibilities for a while."

A young carer is someone under the age of 18 who provides or intends to provide care for an adult or disabled child.

Torfaen Young Carers Service provides ongoing support to around 180 young carers across the borough through care and support plans focusing on one-to-one support, social groups, training, reducing worry, stress, and isolation.

The service also works with schools and colleges to raise awareness and support, and weekly play and youth clubs are delivered by Torfaen Play and Torfaen Youth Services.

The young people are now looking forward to Carers Week, running from 9 - 15 June, and Carers Rights Day on 21 November.

Additionally, the service will host two young carer festivals in June and August, and will provide opportunities for residential trips and activities during the summer holidays.

Cllr Richard Clark, Executive Member for Children, Families and Education said: "Torfaen Council is committed to supporting our young carers, ensuring they have the best possible start in life.

“By providing them with opportunities to relax, connect with peers, and receive tailored support, we aim to alleviate some of the pressures they face and promote their wellbeing."
