Estyn has praised staff and pupils at Garteg Primary School following a recent inspection.

According to a report published this week, the school inspectorate said the headteacher and teaching staff have high expectations of pupils and monitor progress carefully to identify and address any areas for improvement.

The school's Climb to Sparkle curriculum was praised for offering pupils a wide range of learning opportunities, helping all pupils to make good progress in literacy, numeracy and digital skills.

The report also recognised the school's resources inside and outside, including a rich outdoor environment featuring woodland and wetland areas.

The inspectors said staff were diligent in monitoring attendance and work effectively to help all pupils attend every day. During the summer term, more than 60 certificates for 100 per cent attendance and most improved attendance rewards were given to pupils.

Headteacher Sue Roche said: "We are extremely proud of the the unwavering commitment of governors, staff  and pupils, parents and local authority. All have supported our school leadership teams, pupils and the community  to share in the success of our Estyn report.

"The report recognises the warm, inclusive nature of our school, the exemplary behaviour of our pupils and the strong and effective teaching, combined with our highly successful Climb to Sparkle Curriculum.

"These ensure our pupils are provided with outstanding provision to apply core skills to enable pupils to make very strong progress."

Cllr Richard Clark, Executive Member for Children, Families and Education, added: "I would like to congratulate everyone at Garnteg Primary School for an excellent Estyn report. The school is a beacon within their local community."

Inspectors made one recommendation - to improve pupils’ Welsh oracy skills.
