Twenty-four teenagers have swapped lie-ins and boxsets for volunteering with Torfaen Play Service this summer - the highest number to date.

The 14 and 15-year-olds, many of whom went to playschemes when they were younger, will serve as Play Helpers, delivering fun, inclusive, and safe play opportunities to more than 2,400 children and young people.

They’ll be helping with everything from outdoor games and creative arts, to group activities and themed play days.

Layla Parker, 14, who has signed up for the first time, said: “I was nervous at first, but I’m keen to learn, meet new people and gain lots of experience.

"It’s great to be part of something that makes a difference, and I’m hoping it will boost my confidence and open up new opportunities for me in the future.”

Harvey Davenne, 15, who volunteered last year, said: “I used to love coming to playscheme when I was younger, so it feels amazing to now be part of the team.

"I can’t wait to help make this summer special for the younger children.”

The Play Helpers will join a team of more than 380 people, including Play Volunteers aged 16 and over, and Torfaen Play Service staff, working across 22 sites, including 11 specialist settings for children with disabilities.

This week, the Play Volunteers will take part in training at West Monmouth School, covering topics such as safeguarding, disability awareness, first aid, and practical playwork.

Cllr Richard Clark, Executive Member Children, Families and Education, said: “Torfaen Play Service continues to lead the way in improving children’s wellbeing and development through inclusive, high-quality play opportunities.

“I’m always amazed by the number of young people who give up their time to support others over the summer. My thanks go to every volunteer who make this programme such a success.”

The play schemes will kick off on Monday 28 July and will run up until Friday 22 August.
