Free furniture for schools and community groups

Nearly 100 items of furniture are being offered to local schools and community groups ahead of a project to renovate Cwmbran Library.

Bookshelves, tables, desks and chairs that cannot be repurposed as part of the redesign are available for free on a first come first serve basis. Items must be collected before Monday February 24.

For information about what's available and to request equipment, visit Get Involved Torfaen. You can also visit the library to see the items.

The library will be closed for refurbishment for around four weeks, from Monday 24 February.

The redesign will include new digital facilities, an agile working hub, teenage library and areas for health, well-being and community support. Click on the button below to see the new plans.

The project is funded by a £300,000 Welsh Government Transformation Capital Grant and £127,000 from Torfaen Council.

It follows £300,000 investment in Pontypool Library in 2011 and £100,000 for Blaenavon Library in 2015.

Cllr Peter Jones, Executive Member for Corporate Governance and Resources, said: "Cwmbran Library is a fantastic community facility that is already well used by thousands of people every month.

"This summer, more than 900 children took part in our annual reading challenge with many coming into the library every week to borrow books.

"We hope this new investment will help to modernise the facilities and attract even more visitors. We hope people will come and see the plans when they're ready and tell us what they think."

The library renovation will form part of wider plans to improve Gwent House over the next couple of years.
