Pupils from secondary schools in Torfaen have taken part in a live webinar to hear the firsthand account of a Holocaust survivor.

The event on Friday was held in advance of today’s Holocaust Memorial Day, which this year marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Year 9 to 11, and sixth form pupils from schools in Torfaen, Blaenau Gwent and Caerphilly, listened to the experiences of Eva Clarke, who was born in Mauthausen concentration camp, in Austria, and got the chance to ask questions.

Eva shared her story of Nazi persecution, provided insights into the historical background of the Holocaust, its lasting impact on modern society, and the lessons we can learn from history.

Sofia Kehoe-Ashman, a Year 9 RVE student at Abersychan School, said “It is unimaginable the horror that Eva’s family went through. It made me realise how lucky we are.” .

Fellow pupil, Cian Gibbs added, “Listening to Eva has made me want to go to Auschwitz. I want to see what Eva’s family had to go through and remember them.”

The event was hosted by the West Gwent Community Cohesion team, based at Torfaen Council, in partnership with the Holocaust Educational Trust.

Secondary school pupils were also invited to take part in an art and poetry competition based on the theme of this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day – For a Better Future.

Year 9 pupil Fred Edwards, from West Monmouth School, was selected as the Torfaen winner, receiving a £50 Amazon voucher.

Councillor Peter Jones, Torfaen Council Executive Member for Corporate Governance and Resources, said, "It is crucial that we continue to educate our young people about the Holocaust and the devastating impact of hatred and intolerance.

“By hearing firsthand accounts and engaging in meaningful discussions, we can ensure that the lessons of the past are not forgotten and work towards a future built on understanding and respect."

To mark Holocaust Memorial Day, Civic Centre, in Pontypool, will be lit purple this evening in remembrance of all those who were persecuted.
