When Max Griffiths started volunteering with Torfaen Play at the age of 14, he had no idea it would lead to a lifelong love of working with children.
Max, from Cwmbran, began volunteering as a play helper before becoming a play volunteer at the age of 16.
At 18, he joined the team as a paid play worker, leading inclusive activities like sports, group games, and educational workshops across various term time and holiday programmes.
After studying drama at university, Max, who used to attend a Torfaen Playscheme in Llanyravon as a child, decided to become a teacher – continuing to work for the play service while he studied for a teaching qualification.
Max, 25, is now a teacher at Marshfield Primary School in Newport – a career decision he says was inspired by his experiences with Torfaen Play Service.
He said: “Torfaen Play Service has played a pivotal role in shaping who I am today. It’s where I discovered my passion for working with children, providing me with endless opportunities to learn, grow, and give back to my community.
"I’m proud to be part of such an impactful service that supports not only the development of children but also those who dedicate their time to it.
"If anyone considers passing up the opportunity to volunteer with Torfaen Play, I would urge them to think again. It has been incredibly important for both my personal growth and development."
Max still keeps his hand in the play service by helping out at events such as the big event and Pontypool Party in the Park, and also hosting the annual Play Service Awards ceremony.
Torfaen Play Service is looking for new volunteers to join the service this summer.
To volunteer, individuals must be aged 16, or 14 to sign up as a play helper and must attend mandatory training week commencing 21 July.
The deadline for applications is Saturday 31 May 2025. Click here to apply.
Cllr Richard Clark, Executive Member for Children, Families and Education, said: "Max is a real ambassador for the play service. His contribution within our communities has not only enriched his own life but has also positively impacted countless children.
“Volunteering with Torfaen Play really does equip individuals with invaluable skills and experiences, putting them in good stead for all their future endeavours.
“If you’re thinking of volunteering with Torfaen Play this summer, I highly encourage you to take the leap and make a difference in your community."
