A primary school caretaker is hanging up her mop after more than 40 years’ service at the same school.
Sian Donoghue, 63, joined George Street Primary School as a relief cleaner in 1982 before becoming a dinner lady and then the school’s caretaker in 1997.
She has also taken on numerous other tasks, including organising classroom and corridor displays, setting up classrooms, acting as a traffic warden at the start and end of each school day and running an after-school knitting club.
Today, pupils and staff celebrated her achievement with a special assembly to mark her retirement.
Sian said: “I’ve truly enjoyed the experience especially interacting with the children and their families. There have been countless memorable moments, but two in particular stand out: the respect I’ve always received from the headteachers and staff I’ve worked with, and the kind words I’ve heard about the cleanliness and upkeep of the school.
“These compliments have meant a great deal to me. I’ll miss every aspect of school life. I’ve always considered the school to be "my" school, and letting go of that will be difficult. I’ll miss the energy of the school day, the children, and the staff. However, it’s now time for me to unwind, and I’m excited to travel and visit my son in New Zealand.”
Headteacher – and Sian’s daughter - Keri Manley, added: “During her time at George Street, Sian has welcomed many families and staff with warmth and dedication. A constant source of support, she has been there for all who have walked through the doors, offering her help and guidance.
"Her contribution has been invaluable. She will be greatly missed by everyone and we wish her a happy and relaxing retirement, filled with all the joy she truly deserves.”
Cllr Richard Clark, Executive Member for Children, Families and Education, said: “The success of our schools relies on people like Sian who go above and beyond to ensure our buildings are clean, safe and enjoyable places for pupils, staff and our communities. I wish Sian a very happy and well deserved retirement.”
