Free heating scheme

An initiative to help households on low incomes or benefits afford to put the heating on this winter has been launched by Torfaen Council.

The free Domestic Heating Energy Efficiency Scheme improves the effectiveness of heating systems, which reduces the amount of energy being used - saving money and reducing carbon emissions.

It works by installing an additive called Endotherm into central heating systems which enables the heating system to heat up more quickly and stay hotter for longer.

The process takes 10 minutes and is estimated to save householders up to £168 a year.

The scheme is open to residents who are on low incomes or benefits, who have been in energy debt or have a health condition made worse by living in a cold home.

It is open to homeowners and people who rent privately who have a wet central heating system or boiler.

Gary Meale, Torfaen Council's Community Decarbonisation Officer, said: "According to the Energy Saving Trust the average household heating bill is around £600 per year, excluding standing charges. However, this will rise with the increase in the price cap.

"Endotherm has been evidenced to reduces home heating costs by up to 15 per cent or more per year saving per year. As the additive can last in excess of 10 years and with future energy prices likely to rise this could equate to around £1000 across the lifetime of the product."

The Domestic Heating Energy Efficiency Scheme is funded by the UK Government. It is expected the fund will cover the cost of 70 households.
