Entrepreneurs are pitch perfect

Seven entrepreneurs got the chance to pitch their business ideas to two industry experts as part of a new Start Up Programme.

Fifteen people took part in the free eight-week programme aimed at anyone with a new business, or plans to set up on their own.

The entrepreneurs delivered their pitches to Bob Barnes, from SH+P intellectual property lawyers, and Iestyn Foster, Chief Executive of healthcare business Amotio, and Cllr Joanne Gauden, Executive Member for Economy, Skills and Regeneration.

Lauren Symes, owner of Lauren's Animal Services, said: "The course has really helped me focus on what I need to do and gave me the tools to launch my new business."

Sally Richards, from Body and Mind Recovery, said: "I came on the course to learn about finances and business plans and it's been so valuable."

The other pitches were delivered at Croesyceiliog Community Education Centre by Matthew Elsey, owner of Inner Alchemy; Abi Phillips, from Abi's Creative Station, Caz Lottay, from The Crystal Teapot; Claire Pumford, who is hoping to open an affordable prom shop and Steve Smith, who is aiming to launch Squishies photo products.

Bob Barnes added: "I'm thrilled to have been part of the panel, offering feedback and advice on members’ programs and pitches. It’s inspiring to see such fantastic business ideas and personal growth emerging.

"Hats off to Welsh ICE and the council for their incredible work in supporting these programs and empowering individuals to turn their innovative ideas into thriving businesses.”

Cllr Joanne Gauden, Executive Member for Economy, Skills and Regeneration, said: "It was really exciting to hear from such a diverse range of new businesses. Supporting small and

medium companies is part of our Well-being Objective to make Torfaen a great place to do business.

"We know there is a wealth of untapped talent in the area, and this programme provides individuals with the guidance and support they need to turn their ideas into reality."

The 8-week programme was a collaboration between the council's business engagement team and the business training academy Welsh Ice. It covered business development, branding and marketing and sales and finance. A free creche was also available for anyone with children.

The entrepreneurs will receive ongoing support from Torfaen Business Direct and Welsh Ice.

Hope Eckley, Welsh ICE Academy manager said: "We believe that with the right support, anyone can turn a great idea into a thriving business. The Start-Up Programme is a fantastic opportunity for local residents to take the first step toward making their entrepreneurial dreams a reality."

The next Torfaen Start Up programme will start in January. For more information, contact businessdirect@torfaen.gov.uk or call 01633 648735.

The programme is part of the Business Support Project, which has received £218,000 from the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

Support for existing businesses will be on offer at the first Torfaen business support exhibition on Thursday December 5, between 8.30am-10.30am. The free event at the Parkway Hotel will include funding and financial advice, business development support and employee well-being. Book here.
