Today, community representatives and members of Torfaen Council held a flag raising ceremony at Civic Centre in Pontypool to mark the start of Armed Forces Week.

The event, held in honour of brave service men and women, both past and present, took take place at 9:30am and was attended by local dignitaries and veterans.

The service was led by Father Philip Godsell, Rector Area Dean and Ministry Leader of the Mid Torfaen Ministry Area, with readings from Ysgol Gymraeg Gwynllyw students Jacob Simmonds and Mollie Watkins.

In addition, a small service took place with members of Gwent’s Royal British Legion, to unveil their Freedom of the Borough award at Civic Centre.

The framed scroll is now on display near the council’s chamber in the Civic Centre.

The Freedom of the Borough, which was awarded on 22 June 2021 by the five councils comprising Greater Gwent, recognised the Legion’s century-long commitment to supporting ex-service personnel and their families.

A small number of events are taking place across Torfaen to mark armed forces week, ahead of the national service taking place in Cardiff this coming Saturday.
