Plans to introduce a new recycling bag are being considered as part of the council’s Raise the Recycling Rate campaign.

The new red bags will be used for plastic, cans, tins, and cartons and will be collected weekly.

Glass, paper, batteries, and textiles will continue to go out weekly in the black boxes.

The 90-litre bags will hold more than the black boxes, so will reduce the need for residents to have multiple boxes and cut the time it takes for crews to sort recycling at the kerbside.

A report proposing the change has been sent to the Executive Member for Waste and Sustainability this week. If approved, red bags will be introduced from October.

Councillor Sue Morgan, Executive Member for Waste and Sustainability, said: “We know a lot of residents already sort out their recycling into different black boxes, which makes a big difference to crews.

“The new bags will be easier to store, and the resealable lids will reduce the amount of litter caused by items blown from boxes.

“They also offer much better value for money - costing less to buy and being more hardwearing”

Cardboard will continue to be collected in the blue bags and food waste in the brown caddies weekly.

In 2023, 87 per cent of people who took part in the Raise the Rate survey said they would be prepared to separate their recycling.

The Welsh Government has said local authorities must reach 70 per cent recycling by 2025.
