This year’s popular Summer Reading Challenge kicks off in libraries across Torfaen this Saturday.

Children aged between four and 11 are invited to sign up for the challenge to read or listen to six or more library books throughout the summer.

This year's theme is Marvellous Makers, which celebrates books about creative activities including music, modelling and writing.

The children will get to collect fun rewards along the way, including stickers, badges and origami challenges.

A £100 gift voucher for Smyths Toy Store is also up for grabs, where one lucky winner be selected in a prize draw when the challenge comes to end.

And the best part? It won’t cost a penny to join. It's free to join Torfaen Library - you can register for a library card by visiting the Torfaen Council website or by popping into your local library.

Cllr Richard Clark, Torfaen Council Executive Member for Children, Families, and Education said: “More than 400 children completed last year's reading challenge and we'd love to see even more reaching the target this summer.

"Children not only have a blast during the challenge but also return to school in September more fluent, confident, and happy readers."

The Summer Reading Challenge is run by The Reading Agency which has collaborated with the arts charity Create for this year’s challenge.

Books, ebooks and audiobooks all count towards the challenge.

There are also an exciting line up of events at Torfaen Libraries throughout the summer holidays, from lively Rhymetime sessions to coding workshops and Lego clubs.

The popular story and craft sessions will also return for children aged 5 to 10, hosted by all three libraries throughout August.

Younger children don’t need to miss out as there is also a mini challenge available for under 4s.

For more information about the Summer Reading Challenge and upcoming activities, visit your local library, follow Torfaen Libraries on Facebook or call 01633 647676.
