Pupils from Llantarnam Primary School swapped the classroom for the boardroom on an educational visit to Burtons Biscuits this week.
Thirty Year 5 and 6 pupils were given an exclusive tour of the factory, in Cwmbran, where they watched the processes involved in making, packaging, and distributing biscuits.
The children were then taken to the boardroom where they were tasked with devising innovative ideas to improve the biscuit-making process and new marketing strategies.
They also had the opportunity to taste-test Wagon Wheels, cookies, and chocolate fingers produced at the factory, and took home a goody bag and a T-shirt.
Cora said: “I loved the Jammie dodger door handle in the buffer room, I thought it was so cool."
Oscar added: “I learned about all the different roles the staff have there, even the biscuit flattener - very important."
Evie said: “The day was really interesting, and I didn’t expect the factory to be as big as it is."
The visit, which was arranged by Cllr David Thomas, allowed pupils to learn more about science and technology, as well as gain work-related experiences aligned with the national curriculum.
Headteacher Laura Perrett, said: "We are committed to providing our pupils with unique learning opportunities that extend beyond the classroom.
“This visit to Burtons Biscuits allowed our students to apply their creativity and problem-solving skills in a real-world setting, making learning both fun and impactful.”
The Burtons Biscuits Company was established in 1935 and has six manufacturing sites across the UK. The Cwmbran factory alone produces around 45,000 tonnes of biscuit each year.
Cllr Richard Clark, Executive Member for Children, Families and Education, said: "Excursions like this are vital in offering children a broader education. They not only make school more enjoyable and engaging but also have a positive impact on school attendance. And thankfully, the pupils didn’t have to face The Apprentice’s Lord Alan Sugar!”
