A Pontypool man has overcome barriers to work to secure local employment, thanks to Torfaen Council’s Communities for Work Plus (CfW+) project.
Nathan Pettitt, 25, from Trevethin, was first introduced to CfW+ by his mother-in-law in January, having struggled to find stable employment, and often relying on precarious agency work.
Employment Mentor, Megan helped Nathan explore his interests and skills, develop his CV, search for jobs, and improve his interview techniques.
Having faced financial challenges after a period of unemployment, Nathan lacked the funds for necessary clothing and initial transport costs for work.
CfW+’s In-Work Barrier Fund covered his bus tickets, safety clothing, and childcare for the first month of his job, which he managed to secure at Burtons Biscuits in Cwmbran thanks to the support he received.
Nathan’s journey has been anything but easy, growing up in foster care and suffering physical injuries from accidents. He said, “I would not have found or got this job without the support of CfW+.They helped me with everything I needed, from job seeking and interview guidance to clothes and transport.”
“Now, I’m settled and really enjoying my role at Burtons Biscuits. I’ve made new friends and feel a sense of achievement each day. I am so much happier in a role which can hopefully offer me some stability moving forward.”
Communities for Work Plus is a Welsh Government-funded initiative and helps unemployed individuals from across Torfaen to find sustainable employment through a bespoke mentoring programme.
They provide community based drop-in employment sessions, as well as offering support through its Well Being Team who provide counselling, physical wellbeing and mental health programmes.
CFW+ forms part of Torfaen Council’s Torfaen Works Employability Programme – which consists of UK Government Shared Prosperity Funded projects CELT+ and Inspire +.
