Our Dietitian’s Choice
Did you know that nutrients such as iron and zinc play an important role in supporting children's health, wellbeing and ability to learn? Iron helps carry oxygen around the body and contributes to normal cognitive function, while zinc supports growth, development and normal immune function.
Our delicious homemade lasagne is a nutritious choice, made with a blend of lean minced beef and Quorn mince to provide a great source of both iron and zinc. Served with garlic bread, this meal is one of the strongest options on the menu for these important nutrients.
It's also a good source of calcium, thanks to the semi-skimmed milk used in the creamy white sauce and the cheese topping, helping to support healthy bones and teeth.
To help pupils work towards their 5-a-day, we always encourage them to add 2 portions of vegetables or salad, making this a balanced and nourishing meal that supports healthy growth, learning and wellbeing.
Sustainable School Meals
Quality Ingredients, Responsibly Sourced
The beef component of our lasagne is made using UK Red Tractor Assured beef mince. Red Tractor standards provide independently audited assurance covering areas such as animal welfare, food safety, traceability and environmental protection. By sourcing UK-assured beef, we are supporting British farming while providing confidence in the provenance and quality of the ingredients used in our school meals.
Lower Carbon Impact, Same Great Taste
Beef is recognised as a relatively high greenhouse gas-emitting food ingredient. To help reduce the environmental impact of this recipe, we have reformulated our lasagne to include 40% Quorn mince alongside 60% beef mince. Quorn has a substantially lower carbon footprint than beef, and this simple change is estimated to reduce the carbon footprint of the mince component of the dish by around 39%, while maintaining the taste, texture and nutritional quality that pupils enjoy.
Supporting Welsh Producers
Our lasagne also includes Welsh-produced semi-skimmed milk and cheddar cheese in the white sauce and topping. Sourcing dairy products from Wales helps support local farmers, businesses and employment, while also contributing to shorter supply chains and potentially reducing food miles associated with ingredient transport.
