We’re celebrating the power of community events to bring people together, foster civic pride and boost the local economy. Like the Relay for Life event, in Pontypool, which celebrates it's 10th anniversary this year
This year marks 10 years since the first Relay for Life in Pontypool Park - one of only two Relay for Life events in Wales.
The community event in aid of Cancer Research UK brings together teams of relayers who walk continuously over a 24-hour period, with at least two participants on the track at all times carrying a baton, symbolising the ongoing fight against cancer.
This year, around 21 teams will take part, including one from Torfaen Council called Team Torfaen.
Caroline Genever-Jones, Elections and Business Manager, who will be one of the team leaders, said: “This is the third year we’ve taken part in Relay for Life and it gets better every year. Everyone in the team has been affected by cancer in some way, so it’s a great opportunity for us to remember our loved ones and support each other.”
Leanne Powell, Event Chair, added: “Our small community in Torfaen has raised nearly £700,000 for Cancer Research UK over the past 10 years, which is something I am incredibly proud of.
"Our relayers really rely on the support they receive on the day to keep them going throughout the 24 hours. Please come along during the day and celebrate with us. There will be stalls, food vendors, and great local entertainment from 11am.”
The event, starting on Saturday 4th July, includes daytime entertainment such as singers and bands, choirs, dance troupes, and even a ukulele band. The Candle of Hope ceremony will take place at 9:30pm, offering a chance to celebrate, remember, have hope and believe.

All proceeds will go to Cancer Research UK, supporting vital research and bringing us closer to finding a cure
