Pension Awareness Week Events

Pension Awareness Week is an annual industry wide event that is taking place from the 15th – 19th September this year.  It aims to help people to get to know their pension better than ever and prepare for the future.  While breaking down all the confusing jargon and taking control of your financial wellbeing for the future. 

To celebrate the week the Pension team is offering Torfaen employees the opportunity to join a number of information events.

Event 1: Why Join the LGPS (Microsoft Teams) 

Are you a current member of the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) but not sure about the full benefits offered to you? Maybe you are thinking of joining and want to find out more or maybe you are thinking of opting out?

Join the Pensions team for an informative session that will walk you through: 

  • How the LGPS works
  • The valuable benefits it provides
  • Why it could be a great choice for your future 

There will also be an opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

Target Audience: Existing and potential new members

Date & Time: Tuesday 16th September at 10.30am (approximately 30 minutes)

Format: Microsoft Teams

Event 2: One-to-One Appointments

Do you have questions about your pension?

The Pensions team are providing members the opportunity to speak with their friendly and helpful staff by booking a face to face appointment. It’s a chance to ask questions so you can take charge of your pension.

Target Audience: Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) Members

Date: Wednesday 17th September 2025

Venue: Floor 3, Civic Centre

How to Book: Please email the Benefits Team Manager, Matthew Cox  Matthew.cox@torfaen.gov.uk with your national insurance number, full name and a preferred time of the day that would be best for you. Matthew will then email you back to confirm your appointment time.

Event 3 - Topping Up Your Pension (Microsoft Teams)

Have you checked your pension value recently? (Use My Pensions Online for instant access.) Will it be enough for your retirement? If not, consider boosting your pension.

Join the Pension team for an information session that will explain in more detail how you can boost your pension. They will cover:

  • APC (Additional Pension Contributions): Purchase extra pension for increased benefits.
  • AVC (Additional Voluntary Contributions): Save more alongside your main scheme for a possible tax-free lump sum or extra income.

These options will be discussed in detail and they will answer any questions you have.
